BIOS is the Basic Input Output System, which is functional in controlling all the hardware connected to the motherboard. The BIOS information is placed safely on a chip resting on the motherboard. Flashing BIOS is about updating an existing old version of the BIOS with a new and updated version. In the process you will also be fixing bugs (if any exists in your system) and you can always hope that the computer’s performance will improve.

Prerequisites for flashing the BIOS

  • It takes around 20 to 30 minutes, so you need to have that much time and uninterrupted power supply in that interval because a power failure in amidst the process can be potentially harmful for your system. The importance of uninterrupted power supply during flashing cannot be stressed enough. Power failure during flashing may be fatal to your system since incomplete and unsuccessful flashing process is absolutely dangerous. Occasionally flashing may longer than 30 minutes, so you have to be prepared for that as well.
  • A blank CD, a CD burning tool, and a Boot CD (yes, we’ll do it using a CD and not the outdated floppy disk).

How to Flash Computer BIOS?

  1. The first step is to find out all about your BIOS. You need to find out your current BIOS version. For this you have to open your System Information application and click on System Summary. The BIOS version number is usually displayed under below the computer’s processor speed. Simply, open Run command prompt and type ‘msinfo32‘. You’ll find your BIOS version.
  2. Then you have to browse through your computer manufacturer’s website and get to the Support page.
  3. Depending upon the manufacturer website you have to reach the ‘Download’ option.
  4. There you might be asked to enter the BIOS version or computer’s model number.
  5. This will help you get to reach the correct BIOS revision flash program, which you need to download along with the listed BIOS revision.
  6. Once you have downloaded and saved both the files, burn both the BIOS flash program and BIOS revision list it into a bootable USB or CD.
  7. Insert the Boot CD into the system and restart the system. Press the key (the key varies from in different system, you have to find yours) to avail the option of Booting from the CD.
  8. Next insert the BIOS CD into the computer and type according to the following syntax: wherein ‘a’ stands for the drive letter of the CD drive, ‘flashprogram’ is the actual name your BIOS flash program and ‘biosfile’ is the name of the BIOS file to which you want to upgrade. Replace all the defined values as per your configuration.- > a:flashprogrambiosfile
